How to Evaluate a Jewelry Manufacturing Partner — a Buyer’s Checklist

Ask for four things before you send a design: a live video walkthrough of the production floor, a pre-production sample against a written specification, stated lead times per stage, and the certification laboratory used for centre stones. A supplier who can answer all four in one reply is a manufacturer; a supplier who deflects any of them is probably an intermediary quoting someone else’s floor.

Verify the floor exists

Ask for a live video walkthrough rather than photographs. Photographs circulate; a live camera pointed at a casting line on request does not. Casting, setting, polishing and QC should be visibly separate stations with people at them.

Get the timeline in writing before the deposit

Lead times quoted as "about a month" become six weeks. Ask for days per stage — CAD, sampling, pre-production sample, bulk, QC — and hold the supplier to the document. A factory that plans its own floor can give you those numbers immediately.

Insist on a pre-production sample

The PPS is the reference bulk must match. Without one, every quality conversation later becomes opinion against opinion. Approving a PPS costs you a week and saves you an entire rejected shipment.

Check certification independently

Report numbers should be listed on packing documentation, and you should be able to verify each one against the issuing laboratory’s own database. Any supplier reluctant to give you report numbers up front has told you something important.

Ask what happens when something is wrong

The answer you want is specific: photograph it, we replace or repair it, and here is who you email. Vague reassurance is not a policy.

Confirm they will not compete with you

A manufacturer running its own consumer brand is a competitor with your designs and your cost structure. Ask directly, and get NDA practice in writing before you send anything.
