Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds — A Buyer’s View
For a retail buyer the practical difference is price per carat and margin structure, not material. Lab-grown and natural diamonds are the same material — carbon in the same crystal structure — graded by the same labs on the same 4Cs scale. Lab-grown lets a buyer put a visibly larger centre stone into the same retail price point, which is why most US chains now carry both programs side by side rather than choosing one.
What is actually different
Origin, and therefore price and supply. Lab-grown stones are grown by CVD or HPHT in weeks; natural stones are mined. Both are certified by IGI, GIA and other labs, and lab-grown reports state the growth method. Everything downstream — cutting, setting, finishing — is identical, and the same setters work both in our factory.
Why buyers run both
Assortment logic: lab-grown moves volume at accessible price points and carries the larger visual carat weight that converts online; natural holds the heritage and resale narrative for the high end. Splitting the two across suppliers fragments your supply chain, so most brands prefer one manufacturer who runs both.
What to specify when you order
State the stone program per line, not per order: which SKUs run lab-grown, which run natural, the certification lab you require, and the grading floor (colour and clarity) you will accept. We hold that spec across repeat orders so replenishment matches the original run.
Disclosure
Lab-grown must be disclosed as such throughout the chain — on the report, on the invoice and to the end consumer. FTC guidance in the US is explicit on this, and any manufacturer who is casual about disclosure is a liability to your brand.
